T.C.B. Boxing

Temple UMC is home to T.C.B. Boxing, a non-profit boxing club started by Ramon Avery, a Heights resident, with a passion of giving back to his community and providing kids the opportunity to box and as he says, “learn about life.”

About

Ramon’s boxing history began at Temple UMC many years ago. At 16 years old, he first stepped into Temple’s boxing ring, coached and mentored by the legendary Kenny Lane, a professional boxer who twice fought for a national title. In retirement, Kenny shared his skills and philosophy of life in a boxing club at Temple.

One of his best students was a young Ramon Avery, who first had to prove to his mom that he was worthy of boxing. He had to clean up his act, get better grades in school, and focus on the future. Within his first year, Ramon was runner-up in a state Golden Gloves tournament in the middleweight division. Before he officially retired from competitive boxing, there would be more championships, more honors, more victories.

As Ramon states, “Boxing gave me a second chance at life. Without this, I would have been dead or in prison my whole life.

It is with that passion for changing lives that Ramon started T.C.B. Boxing. Ramon and Temple have taken the challenge of providing a safe place for kids to grow as people through the boxing program. Today, Ramon is training more than 10 boxers from the community and is also working with the Muskegon Heights school system in providing boxing instruction.
